fish*tank - a turtlelog

September 25, 2002

No photo today; sorry 'bout that! Fish is doing well. He stopped pooing for a few days this week, but I threw in some shrimps as well as his ReptoMin for a change and that got his bowels moving. Lots of sites recommend feeding lots of different things to keep turtles healthy; I certainly believe that now!

Fish is becoming a picky eater now though, so it's going to be difficult. He's been refusing apple lately (and it used to be such a favourite of his). He won't eat melon. Lettuce only seems to serve as a hiding place for him. At least he still loves his ReptoMin! I'll keep trying...

Put together from some old photos of Fish I have. On that particular occasion I'd let him walk on my desk (with supervision of course) and he decided he wanted to climb my modem. He tripped over a wire and fell over backwards - and lay there for a couple of seconds looking at me as if to say 'Hey, aren't you going to do something?' before flipping himself right way up again.

Fish got some vitamins yesterday (it's been almost a month since I last gave him any!) and right now he's outside soaking up the rays :) It's been a while since he's been able to go outside - the weather's been horrible lately.

retreating figure

Due to my bedroom being infested with ants, Fish was moved into his feeding tank and lived on the balcony for two days because the bug spray is poisonous (even if only the plant holder outside the window was sprayed). His tank was also moved out into the living room but since there was no convenient electic socket for the filter/lamp/etc, he stayed in the small tank.

And due to my digicam's LCD being smashed, photos of Fish are going to be few and far between now, until I get a new one (which won't be soon). It's a pity, but I'll still try my best with the webcam, and if that doesn't work out, well - I still have a well-stocked hard disk of old photos :)

Fish seems none the worse for wear after his two-day exposure to the elements ;) In fact, he seemed very happy to have his usual tank back, today! It's much bigger than the feeding tank.

Precious little turtle; isn't he cute in this photograph? He was basking on his rock and I wanted to get a head shot of him. He pulled his head in, but not all the way, and his neck fat poofed up around his face :) I believe he's getting a bit too fat though! Perhaps he should go on a diet? More veggies for you, Fish, and less shrimps and ReptoMin I think!

Fish in my hand

This is Fish in my hand. He's grown quite a bit from the 4.3 cm baby he was when I got him! He's now fully 5.5 cm and his facial features have actually changed a little too; his eyes aren't as big in proportion (though still quite big), and his nose is a bit pointier. He weighs a good bit for his size, about as much as a rock of the same length, but I don't know exactly how much he weighs, as we don't have a set of kitchen scales. I'd guess around fifty grams. He's fidgety if he's held tightly, but he likes sitting on the palm of my hand :) Perhaps my hands are too hot?

Fish is beginning to like being held! If you hold him very still in your hands and speak to him softly he will relax. It's awfully nice to have a turtle lying limp and happy on your hand - Fish has got the softest neck and paws, and his claws are nowhere near sharp any more.

However if you move even slightly, he will still struggle to get away (not as much as he used to though!), and he doesn't like being stroked on the shell - he never did.

I believe Fish is becoming tame...he does respond to me a lot, and comes over to the side of the aquarium to say hello when I bend down to see him. He still hasn't bitten me yet since about July. I never thought he would learn to know me, let alone like me - needless to say, I'm very happy!
